Leeds is a very traditional community encompassing all that is positive about Anglo-Jewry and, at the same time, exhibiting a great deal of diversity. People of many different religious views and levels of observance are represented in Leeds and are able to live a religiously fulfilling life. This is highlighted nowhere better than in the synagogues who all have their own flavour and contribute something different to community life. A search through these pages will give you all the necessary religious information to experience a living Judaism in Leeds, both day-by-day and through all the major life cycle events.
Leeds has always been seen as a 'big' Rabbinic job with many a prestigious rabbi having tenure here. For example, Leeds has been home to Rabbi Fisch who contributed to the Soncino commentaries; Dayan Apfel who was an outstanding disciple of the Seridei Aish; Rabbi Rappaport who is on medical ethics on the Chief Rabbi’s cabinet and Rabbi Berkovits who was a prominent Jewish philosopher. Today we are also proud to have some exceptional religious leaders and educators. The community is headed up by Dayan Refson, the Av Bet Din.
