Welfare & Charity

Leeds has a proud tradition of social care, welfare and charitable giving. Right from the beginning of the community, there has been a great sense of needing to 'look after our own'. The 'Leeds Jewish Workers Burial and Trading Society' was set up to provide mutual support amongst the working class Jews of the time and the “Board of Guardians” allowed those better off to give to those less fortunate than themselves. The services we have today are, in many cases, a direct extension from these early years. Today, both the Welfare Board and Housing Association seek to ensure that every member of the community has a good quality of life, regardless of their circumstances. Use the tabs on the side to discover the exceptional work that they do in the community.

For a community such as Leeds, charity begins at home but it by no means ends there. There are innumerable local causes that community members are involved in. Jewish committees raise money for charities that seek to benefit the wider community, country and world. Also, the community has always been proud of their Zionist history and this is manifested in their fundraising for Israel. Leeds has a considerable amount of charities that seek to help the needy in Israel and further the country's development. Having read these pages the key question is: “How can you help?”
