Leeds Jewish Care Services
Leeds Jewish Care Services relies heavily on volunteers, the vast majority of whom are Jewish and are from all walks of life. All prospective volunteers are invited into the centre for an informal chat with Naomi Caplin regarding volunteering opportunities, health and safety and confidentiality. Once someone has decided that they would like to proceed we then complete some simple paperwork and a CRB (criminal records) form.
Volunteers are used in a variety of ways, and everyone has something to give in order to help others. Whatever your skills, you will be able to find a volunteering opportunity that suits you. Examples include:
- Serving lunches to the frail elderly in the community centre.
- Volunteers are needed to drive the minibus to transport the frail elderly into the centre for activities and meals. Alternatively, help to escort them to hospital appointments etc.
- Befriend members of our community who are housebound- they only need to visit once a week for an hour's chat.
- A variety of tasks in thewellfairshop need fulfilling. Some volunteers serve in the shop itself selling donated goods whilst others deliver and later collect the bags for donated goods.
- Some volunteers actually facilitate activities and LJCS are always delighted to hear of anyone with a talent to share i.e. playing an instument.
- At weekends, teams of volunteers record the Jewish Newspapers onto tapes for the blind and partially sighted. Volunteers also serve teas to the blind at their regular monthly socials.
