Chaplaincy

The role of Chaplains and their families is to instill warmth and love to individual students, both in their own homes and in events organised under the auspices of the local Hillel Houses and Jewish Societies. It encompasses not only religious and pastoral duties both on and off campus, but they are also available around the clock for counselling students who have been bereaved, or who have issues with stress, drugs and loneliness. It is not uncommon for the Chaplain’s home to be a hive of activity well into the night as students gather for a shiur or a chocolate fondue evening, a quiet chat or to prepare for an upcoming Yom Tov or Shabbat.

The Leeds Student community is luck to have Rabbi Alan and Tanya Garber who have made a tremendous impact since arriving in 2007. Before landing as a chaplain, Rabbi Garber was an experienced teacher, mountain climber and marathon runner. His wife Tanya is originally from Australia and was an up and coming Radiographer. Together with their three gorgeous children, the Garbers have brought tremendous enthusiasm, creativity and dedication to Jewish student life throughout their region.

Whether you are looking to run with the Rabbi or enjoy a girls’ night in, get in touch with Rabbi Garber and Tanya. They can be reached on or by calling 07815 108260.
