Leeds Chaverim is a simple idea. It's about a group of Jewish people in their 20s and 30s who are looking to add an extra Jewish dimension to their lives. Their aim is to create an open and non-judgemental environment where you can enjoy a range of Jewish experiences, regardless of religious affiliation or level of observance. It was inspired by a national conference where all Jews mix freely, discussing every aspect of Judaism and enjoying socialising in a relaxed atmosphere. A couple of people got together to try and recreate a similar Jewish place in Leeds and the result was the launch of Leeds Chaverim in 2002!
Once a month they hold a "bring-a-dish" style meal where everyone brings a bottle or some food to share (veggie or fish). Kiddush and hamotzi are said before the meal and "Grace" is sang afterwards. There is also a small discussion on a Jewish-related topic led by one of the members of the group. Other than that, it is all about socialising and celebrating Shabbat with a group of friendly, welcoming and like-minded people.
Additionally, Leeds Chaverim are also involved in fundraising, looking to fulfill the Jewish precept of Tikkun Olam (repairing the world). Currently, they are involved in helping two different projects. They support the work of UJIA in their myriad of projects in both Israel and the UK. Specifically, they are keen to support the development of Merom HaGalil which, whilst an area of natural beauty, is at the bottom of the economic and social scales. One-in-five children in this area are considered at risk and two-thirds don't reach university. Leeds Chaverim wish to help UJIA with their educational projects in this area. The second project involves building relationships with volunteers in Sri Lanka who are trying to rebuild the local infrastructure following the tsunami in 2005.
Leeds Chaverim are always seeking to welcome new members. Why not join and shape the future of the group and of the Leeds Jewish Community? To find out more contact Simon Phillips on 07931 370791
