Tribe Youth Worker

Leah Mintz is the Leeds Tribe Youth Worker and works with the three Orthodox shuls, Etz Chaim, BHH and UHC, to provide activities for teenagers in Leeds. Tribe is part of United Synagogue and its purpose serves to provide for teenagers who often do not feel engaged by their synagogues. Stimulating the youth to get involved with their community is something highly important and Leah provides opportunities for them to do this. A large and varied programme include:

  • A monthly Youth Service which allows the youth play a part in the Shabbat morning service, the boys helping to lead the service and the girls giving a Dvar Torah.
  • A very popular weekly discussion group- 'Movies and Morals'- held for the older teens where they watch a film and discuss Jewish Morals and Values that can be drawn from it.
  • Events for festivals such as the 'Hawaiian Supper Quiz' that was held on Tu'Beshevat and other events held for Purim, Lag BaOmer and Pesach.
  • A monthly 'Girls nights' held for the younger teens which allows girls to get together and discuss Jewish values in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

Leah, currently a Medical student in Leeds University, is currently working in this role on a part time basis. Being heavily involved with the Student Jewish community and the J-Soc, she is excited to get involved with the community in North Leeds. She says, “It is a very warm and welcoming community and the kids are all so enthusiastic and I am enjoying working with them”.
